The 36 – year – old man of Sisters Village, East Bank Berbice was found guilty following a trial. The Court heard that between January 1 and 31, he trafficked a 14 – year – old female juvenile to the interior for sexual exploitation.
David was represented by Attorneys – at – Law, Latchmie Rahamat and Peter Hugh. During mitigation, Ms. Rahamat informed the Court that her client had an impeccable record while a member of the Police Force.
She added that he is a father of four minor children and is the sole breadwinner for his family. Following the sentencing, Hugh orally informed the Court of his intention to appeal the matter.
As such, he requested that his client be admitted to bail during the appeal. However, his request was denied by the Chief Magistrate. David made his first on April 25, 2013.
It was noted then that he offered the virtual complainant and her sister a job in a bar. He told the teen she must collect two ounces of raw gold or $20,000 from every man she slept with and hand over the payments to a shopkeeper named ‘Rankin’ to keep.
The Court heard that the teenager did what she was told but did not receive any payment as she was promised. Contact was then made with the Guyana Women Miners Association and the matter was reported.
