Essequibo vendor killed after crashing vehicle in attempt to escape gunmen

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 39-year-old pastry vendor who died after crashing the bus he was driving in an attempt to escape two gunmen.

The incident occurred at around 20:00hrs at Onderneeming, Sandpit, Essequibo Coast on Sunday night.

Dead is Shawn Albert, called Dexter Prince and also known as ‘Rastaman’, who was a father of one. He resided at Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Albert was in the company of another man and they were selling pastries and other products from a minibus.

Reports are that at around 20:00hrs, two armed bandits approached and attacked the two salesmen during which the gunmen discharged three rounds.

During the ordeal, Albert attempted to escaped by driving away the bus but he ended up crashing the vehicle into a nearby fence.

He was later rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body was examined but no gunshot wound was seen, Police said, noting that the body is at the Suddie Hospital Mortuary awaiting a postmortem.

Reports indicate that the bandits carted off with some $60,000 in cash.
