Rajendra Anauge, 19, of Section ‘B’ Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast was killed on Friday evening after he was struck down by an alleged drunken driver.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the accident occurred at about 18:40h on the Onderneeming Public Road.
Investigations revealed that motor car PSS 7038, driven by a 23-year-old suspect, was proceeding north along the western carriageway of the road reportedly at a fast rate of speed; and as the driver tried to negotiate a right turn, he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the teenage pedestrian.
Picked up and rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital in an unconscious state, the pedestrian later succumbed to his injuries.
The 23-year-old driver, a resident of Suddie Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, failed a breathalyzer test and has since been taken into Police custody to assist with the investigation.
A post-mortem examination on the body of 19-year-old Anauge is scheduled for next week.
