Police say they are investigating an incident which occurred about 07:00hrs on Monday at Crown Dam, Industry, East Coast Demerara (ECD) which resulted in the death of Hetram Ramchand.
Initial investigations by the police revealed that Ramchand,39, a labourer of Lot 51 Crown Dam, Industry, ECD and a group of men were at a wake house playing a game of cards when an argument ensued which reportedly resulted in a violent altercation where the now dead labourer sustained injuries.
According to the police, a report was made at the Sparendaam Police Station by Ramchand who was advised to seek medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). He was admitted and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
However, the man’s family members told this publication a different story than the one relayed by the Police in their release.
They detailed that the incident occurred on Friday night and Ramchand was attempting to part an ensuing fight at the wake house, involving two of his family members and two other persons described as businessmen, when he was lashed to the back of his head with an object and he fell to the ground, receiving further injuries as the fight continued.
According to the man’s family he was taken to the police station by his nephew to lodge a formal complaint but he ended up being detained after the two businessmen made a report that they were assaulted by Ramchand.
The businessmen were reportedly released to procure medicals while Ramchand remained detained until Saturday evening.
The man’s family said that he was suffering from the injuries sustained to his head and was “catching fits.” Upon the his release he was admitted to GPHC and he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night.
Ramchand’s body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
According to the Police, four persons were arrested and are in custody assisting with the investigation.
