Two men are now in police custody following what appeared to be a botched robbery and carjacking attempt in Sixth Avenue, Diamond, East Bank Demerara on Monday evening.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 21:00hrs.
INews understands that one of the suspects went to a Grove Taxi Service and requested a taxi to pick his friend up a short distance away before taking them into Diamond.
The taxi driver obliged and reportedly picked up the other suspect –who appeared to be drunk- at the Dave’s Sports bar and took them into the Diamond Housing Scheme. However, as the vehicle approached the Sixth Avenue, the perpetrators reportedly attempted to rob the taxi driver at gunpoint.
Realising that he was overpowered, the victim –who is a licenced firearm holder- managed to get out of his vehicle and began to fire shots in the direction of his attackers.
The two men, who were in the vehicle as the shots were being fired, reportedly became confused and ran out of the vehicle into a dark corner along the Avenue.
A police patrol that was passing at the time was hailed down, and the duo were arrested. A loaded .32 pistol was found in their possession.
INews understands that the perpetrators were recently implicated in an incident involving a stolen motorcycle.
Investigations are ongoing. (Ramona Luthi)
