[www.inewsguyana.com] – Thirty – six – year old Aldo Haratto Brook of Mahaicony and 30 – year-old Marvin Pestano of Campbellville Housing Scheme, Georgetown, both charged with trafficking narcotics, was today refused bail by Magistrate Judy Latchman when they appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The duo pleaded not guilty to the charge, separately, which alleged that on Saturday, September 13 at Karuni Soesdyke, Linden Highway they had in their possession 17 grammes of Marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant did not disclose the prosecution facts. However, he opposed bail citing the nature and gravity of the offence.
He said that in order for bail to be granted, special reasons must be addressed by the defence.
The unrepresented men were remanded to prison until tomorrow (September 17) before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
When will these dumb Magistrates and Police Prosecutor sit down and work on a plan that will treat this dilemma of shipping our young to prison over a few grammes of Marijuana when we can find them and give an allotted community service and go after the big fishes who are always being caught at JFK with kilos of hard drugs. If this continue in a few years all of Guyana will be in prison. PS; I wonder how many of the lawyers Magistrates and Prosecutor get their high on in private?
