[www.inewsguyana.com] – Fifty – nine – year – old Joel James has been placed on $1 million bail after causing the death of 82 – year – old Daphne Layne.
James appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on August 04, where it was revealed that on July 31, 2015 he drove motor car HA 5086, in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Layne at the Houston Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones told the court that the accident occurred when minibus slammed into the back of the car James was driving. Layne was in the front passenger seat of the car.
Jones stated that both James and Layne were injured and were taken to the hospital by an ambulance where Layne was pronounced dead on arrival. A post mortem revealed that the elderly woman died of multiple injuries.
James’ Lawyer explained that his client has no previous convection and he is not a flight risk.
Layne Lot 52 Banks Avenue, D’ Aguiar Park, Georgetown was the front seat passenger of the car when minibus PMM 3891, registered to the Guyana Revenue Authority, slammed into the rear of the car after putting off a passenger.
The car then crashed into a utility pole. Layne was on her way to the Alexander Village masjid at about 08:30hrs when the collision occurred after she had left home in high spirits. Layne sustained a broken hip, a badly damaged face and was unconscious.
