[www.inewsguyana.com] – Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker has revealed that discussions are on the table as it relates to the rehabilitation of the Kitty Municipal Market.
In December 2014, Whittaker along with the City Engineer, the Ministry’s Engineer, and the Ministry’s Municipal Service Officer visited the market to have a firsthand view of the condition within which the vendors operate.
During the visit, the vendors requested that the building be rehabilitated in phases and that they be allowed to continue to vend in other sections of the building while the rehabilitation works are in progress.
Minister Whittaker invited the City Engineer to present a plan on the way forward along with a detailed estimate for rehabilitation works to be done.
According to the release from the Ministry, the City Council has not been proactive in addressing this matter.
“After numerous reminders and urges, the Hon. Minister Whittaker has received neither the report nor the estimates to date,” the Ministry stated.
It was noted however that initial estimates indicate that the total rehabilitation cost would be in excess $100M.
