A 26-year-old man had to be carried into the courtroom of Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, as a result of injuries he sustained.
Shameer Mohammed of Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on July 24, 2016 at Diamond Public Road, EBD, Mohammed drove vehicle PVV 2022 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Wavel Sabsook.
He was also slapped with an additional charge which stated that on the same day at the same location, the defendant was found to be under the influence of alcohol, with 103 micrograms of alcohol – which is above the legal limit – in his system that undermined his control of the vehicle.
The prosecution had no objections to bail, but requested that the defendant report to a traffic officer at the Grove Police Station twice per week.
Bail was granted in the sum of G$1 million for the causing death charge and G$10,000 for the DUI.
The defendant will return to court on September 2.
