[www.inewsguyana.com] – Thirty – five – year old Leon Coates, a businessman was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine – Beharry for the offences of marijuana possession and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The Court heard that on February 06 at his Fifth Avenue Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, he had in his possession 13 grammes of marijuana. It is also alleged that on the same day, at the said location, he was found with a .38 Smith and Wesson revolver with three matching rounds, when he was not a license firearm holder.
Police Inspector Michael Grant said the police swooped down at Coates’ home, when the discovery was made in his bedroom. According to the Prosecutor, Coates admitted that the marijuana belongs to him but denied being the owner of the gun and ammunition.
Five persons were also found in the house at the time of the search and told the police that they were visiting. The three males and two females were detained, while the women were subsequently released.
Coates’ Lawyer, Gordon Gilhuys, asserted that his client never admitted to anything. Coates was granted $50,000 bail for the narcotics charge but was remanded for the possession of arms and ammunition.
He is scheduled to return to Court on February 13.
