[www.inewsguyana.com] – Cabinet has strongly condemned the contents of the “Dem Boys Seh” article on Town Clerk, Carol Sooba, noting that explicit defamation from the Kaieteur News’s depiction of her work was sexist, racist and libellous.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon at his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing said that the article is a fitting example of the pit into which Kaieteur News has descended, and lamented that the rest of the media fraternity has lamely commented and responded to this issue.
“As hallowed as the principle of press freedom is considered, in real life, experiences remain a powerful tool for fettering the exercise of press freedom with responsibilities,” the HPS said.
He noted that there can be no question about the abuse of the facility of press freedom in Guyana and said that history is replete with such abuses.
“Moreover, there can be no doubt that over the years, considerable efforts have been made and continue to be made to render the exercise of press freedom a more responsible exercise. In this regard, various remedies have been tried, which in addition to the recourse to litigation, all have had appreciable impacts,” Dr. Luncheon said.
He explained that while Guyanese have become inure to the Kaieteur News’s excesses and occasional apologies, “there are outposts in the journalistic world, where anarchy still prevails and Kaieteur News reign supreme in this regard.”
