Some 30 persons are now displaced after a fire suspected to be electrical in origin destroyed two houses and caused damages to a third structure at Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The houses located at Lot 99 and Lot 100 were completely gutted while another structure is partially damaged from the blaze. The fire erupted just after 13:00hrs today.
The fire started at Lot 99 where a family of nine resided in a two-storey structure. This publication spoke with a relative of that household, who lives elsewhere. She related that the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) was only recently summoned by her family to address an electrical issue at the house.
“Yesterday it had a lil problem with the fuse box, that GPL came and they did lil work on the box and they were only like 15 minutes here, they ask her to take off the main switch…she said that main switch, that is what cause the fire…the only thing she could have done when the fire start is pick up her kids and leave the house, she couldn’t save anything…and we had a lot of valuables there, my brother stuff, my mother, my sister, nephew, niece, all their valuable destroyed,” the relative related.
A car at Lot 99 was also destroyed in the inferno.
Meanwhile, there were four persons residing at Lot 100. At Lot 98, 17 persons resided there. Though the structure at Lot 98 was only partially destroyed by the fire, the building is considered inhabitable due to the severe water damage.
The Guyana Fire Service has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
