Cop to be charged for reversing pickup into pedestrian

A notice of intended prosecution has been served on a Detective Constable attached to the Beterverwagting Police Station, East Coast Demerara (ECD) after he knocked down a pedestrian whilst reversing a Force-issued pickup.

The incident occurred at around 06:00hrs today at the Mon Repos Main Access Road, ECD.

Police said ranks were leaving a fire scene at Mon Repos in the vehicle and whilst reversing, the Detective Constable collided with a pedestrian, 61-year-old Kamlawattie Singh.

The woman, a resident of Mon Repos, was knocked onto the roadway where the pickup continued to reverse over her.

The woman was picked up in a conscious state, placed into the said Force vehicle and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was medically examined, treated and sent away.

“A notice of intended prosecution was served on the driver,” the police said in a statement.

INews understands that the cops who were in the vehicle never reported the matter to their superiors.

It was not until the CCTV footage of the accident surfaced that the top brass of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was made aware of the matter.

Meanwhile, a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and it recorded .003% micrograms.
