The claims and objections exercise is a mandatory process leading up to the production of a Register of Voters for LGE.
GECOM Chairman, Dr Steve Surjubally at a press conference on Thursday, November 12 revealed that thus far there have been some 558 applications for new registrants, 103 applications for transfers and 8 applications for entries onto the Preliminary List of Voters.
Thus far, there have also been 192 applications for changes or corrections. It was also revealed that for the 2016 polls, there are 580 constituencies as opposed to 585 in 1994 when local government polls were last held.
For the elections, GECOM also revealed that there are 69 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and nine municipalities along with 71 Local Authority Areas.
GECOM also says that it has embarked on an aggressive grassroots campaign to inform the ordinary man of the importance of voting at local government polls. This program will stretch onto elections.
Some legislative issues that had to be resolved were also done, giving GECOM the full legal scope to conduct the elections.
