[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry says it is extremely concerned about the rapidly deteriorating relationship between the executive and administrative arms of the Mayor and City Council.
On Tuesday, the Mayor and his Councillors held their meeting in the parking lot after they were locked out of the Office by Town Clerk, Carol Sooba. The meeting also voted Sooba out of office.
As such, the GCCI said, “The events as reported in the local media are a clear indication that now more than ever there is an urgent need for Local Government elections and more importantly the necessary amendments to relevant legislation to clarify unequivocally who has the right to do what in terms of the governance and administration of this municipality.”
The GCCI reminded that all factions have a fiduciary responsibility to effectively manage the affairs of the City of Georgetown and that the continuing contretemps will only add to the enormous challenges already being faced by the city on a daily basis.
“The Chamber wishes to encourage all parties to make every possible effort to settle their differences so as to concentrate on providing the critical services so badly needed by the city’s residents. They deserve a lot more than to be subjected to these most deplorable series of events.”
