Thirty-two-year-old Quinton Bourne of Castello Housing Scheme, Georgetown was earlier today (Thursday) arraigned before Georgetown Magistrate Judy Latchman on two counts of armed robbery, allegedly committed on Shawn Anthony and Leon Bentam at Sherriff Street, Campbellville Georgetown on August 22, 2017.
Represented by Attorney-at-law Dexter Todd, Bourne pleaded not guilty to the charges, which allege that, while in the company of others, and armed with a gun, he robbed Anthony of one Samsung smartphone and relieved Bentam of a cellular phone and some $2 million in cash before escaping in a waiting motorcar.
In making submissions for reasonable bail for his client, Attorney-at-law Todd attested that his client is a father of two, has no previous or pending matters before the courts, was never fingered in an identification (ID) parade in regard to these matters, and at no point in time had submitted any oral or written statements under caution. Todd thus concluded that the Police have no case against the accused.
But the Prosecutor strongly opposed the defendant being placed on bail. Citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence, and mentioning the penalty attached to such a felony, the prosecutor informed the court that the defendant had refused to participate in an ID parade. He also disclosed that the motor vehicle allegedly used in commission of the crime was found abandoned on Middle Road, West La Penitence, Georgetown.
The defendant was refused bail, and has to return to court on Friday, when his cases would come up before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for assignment.
