Police in Division 4C (East Coast Demerara) have arrested a man, who was accused of stealing a bicycle but was found with an illegal firearm and matching ammunition.
Reports are that a party of policemen on patrol in a Force vehicle, assisted by two ranks on motorcycle patrol, responded to a report of stolen bicycles in the Beterverwagting Village, ECD, sometime around 10:00h today.
During the operation, a 22-year-old unemployed male of Paul’s Lane, Beterverwagting was seen riding a bicycle that was positively identified by the victim as a stolen bicycle.
The suspect was arrested along with the stolen bicycle and escorted to the Beterverwagting Police Station.
At the time of his arrest, he was carrying a brown colour shoulder bag.
On arrival at the station, he threw the bag away in the Police compound, however, it was recovered by a rank and upon inspection, a .38 revolver containing 6 live rounds of ammunition in the chamber and 6 live rounds in the bag were found.
The young man was asked if he has a licence to carry the firearm and he said “no”. As a result, he was told of the offence, cautioned and he remained silent.
The firearm was examined and no serial number was found. It was photographed, sealed and lodged.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old suspect was placed into custody pending charges.
