[www.inewsguyana.com] – Linden’s Chantoba Bright and Compton Caesar were the only legitimate qualifiers for the Carifta Games after day one of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Carifta trials on Saturday at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground, Camp Ayanganna.
Despite the damp condition, Bright jumped 5.53 metres in the girl’s under-18 long jump to win the event and qualify by topping AAG’s qualifying standard of 5.40 metres.
Speedster, Compton Caesar was also in the thick of things running away with the boy’s under-18 100 metres in a time of 10.7s to equal the mark set by the AAG to qualify for the games in April.
While stars like Jason Yaw, Tevin Garraway, Cassey George, Natricia Hooper and Ornesto Thomas all performed exceptionally, but missed their qualifying marks narrowly but should be eligible to make the squad due to their capability and the actual condition of the ground on Saturday which was not conducive for fast times.
Meanwhile, emerging talent Kenisha Phillips continues to rise as she ran away with the girl’s under-18 100 metres in 12.1s while finishing a surprising second in the girl’s under-18 400 metres in a time of 58.0s.
Hooper was the winner of the 400 metres in a time of 57.7s.
