Two Brazilians were today remanded to prison when they appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.
24 – year – old Ishaque Roberio De Olevero and 28 – year – old Oziel Des Santos Viera both pleaded not guilty to the offence which read that on July 12 at the Takutu Bridge in Lethem Region Nine, they had a shotgun in their possession without a license.
Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunte told the court that on the day in question the police were on patrol along the Guyana/Brazil Border when they observed both men walking beneath the bridge with the aid of a flashlight.
The ranks confronted the men and one of the accused dropped a bag on the ground and attempted to flee. However, they were both apprehended and a search of the bag unrelieved the weapon.
Based on the seriousness of the offence and the likelihood of the men absconding from trial, the prosecutor objected to bail. His request was granted and the men will return to court on July 17. [Royan Abrams]
