Brazilian killed in Micobie mining accident

-Dredge was not authorised to operate by GGMC says MNR

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) says it has confirmed that a Brazilian man lost his life in a mining accident in Micobie, Region 8 (Potaro-Siparuni) last evening, March 31, 2017.

According to the Ministry, based on the information it received, the man was a worker connected to a six-inch dredge, which was reportedly operating without the permission of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) at the time.

The Ministry’s investigations have reportedly revealed that the Micobie Village Council granted permission for the operation without informing or consulting the GGMC prior to doing so.

Inews was informed that personnel from the GGMC are presently on the ground conducting preliminary investigations into the mining death and operations.

The Ministry of Natural Resources in a released statement said it expresses its sorrow and regret at this latest mining fatality and “recommits to working with miners, and Amerindian Titled communities to make the industry safe, accident free and better regulated.”

The name of the deceased miner will be released by the authorities in due course.
