[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Brazilian national was granted $100,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after she appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged for taking excess money out of Guyana.
Marisa Silva Cardosa, a housewife who resides at Ituni Street, Bel Air Park, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.
The charge alleged that on December 4, 2014 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara, she failed to declare $11,000 USD, to an immigration officer, which she had in her possession.
The Brazilian woman was represented by attorney-at-law Mark Waldron who requested that his client be released on her own recognizance. According to the lawyer the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) has the money.
A Prosecutor from SOCU objected to self bail and asked that the defendant be placed on a substantial bail.
The matter was adjourned, to April 23.
