[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 22-year-old Brazilian national appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday May 04, where he was charged for assaulting and stabbing another man during a drunken brawl at Melangi Landing, Cuyuni River.
Renaldo Lemar pleaded not guilty to the charge before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. It is alleged that on May 01 with intent to commit murder, he wounded Eddy Branch also called ‘Coolie boy’.
The court heard that the accused operates a bar in the area and Branch frequently visits the shop to make phone calls. Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru said that on the day in question around 03:00 hrs Branch went to the shop, where several persons were imbibing and dancing.
Branch then asked a female for a dance which resulted in a fight between him and another Brazilian man. Lemar then chucked Branch but after he picked up two beer bottles, Lemar then ran out of the shop.
The accused then returned with a spade and fired several blows to Branch and who ran over to another shop. Lemar pursued him and an argument ensued, after which he stabbed Branch to his right abdomen.
Defence counsel, by Paul Fung-a-Fat told the court his client went to the bar and was attacked by Lemar who was armed with a knife. The prosecution did not opposed bail but asked that certain conditions be applied.
Lemar was granted bail in the sum of $350,000 and ordered to report to the officer in charge at the Aranka Police station every Friday. The matter was transferred to Bartica Magistrate’s Court for May 21.
