[www.inewsguyana.com] – Elton Bollers on Sunday ran away with the sprint double at the Athletics Association of Guyana Senior Championships at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
In the final time of the races, Bollers had the fastest heat times of 10.90s and 22.0s to win both races ahead of Tevin Garraway, who won his heat but was a bit slower with times of 11.0s and 22.1s in the 100 and 200 metres respectively.
Natrena Hopper was also a double sprint champion winning both the 100 and 200 metres in 13.1 and 25.7s to be crowned female champ.
Cleveland Thomas also starred on the day where both the Guyana Defence Force and the most of the police team did not participate winning the men’s 1500 and 5000 metres in 4:05.45s and 16:51.61s.
While a number of athletes produced first time wins at the event, the competition was less than compelling due to the non participation of the athletes from the armed forces.
Added to that officials were unable to use the fully automatic time system and had to resort to hand times.
Meanwhile, a few other winners were Andrea Foster in the women’s 1500 metres, Rondel Austin in the men’s 800 metres and Kareem Purch in the men’s 400 metres. Natricia Hooper won the female 400meter but finished second behind her bigger sister, Natrena in the women’s triple jump.
However, the performance of the day was Garraway’s long jump win with a jump of 6.98 metres, which happens to be the best jump on Guyanese soil for the year, bearing in mind Garraway is still a junior athletes at 18 years old.
