[www.inewsguyana.com] – Police say they are investigating the drowning of Boat Captain 49-year-old Chaney Persaud, of 4 Miles Bartica Housing Scheme which occurred at about 1:00hrs yesterday (October 10) at Matope Fall Cuyuni River.
Investigations have revealed that Persaud left Bartica around 10:00hrs in a boat with five persons en-route to Arimu Landing, Cuyuni River. The vessel stopped at the bottom of Matope Falls for the people to disembark.
Subsequent to the disembarking, the boat capsized and Persaud drowned. His body was recovered hours and is at the Bartica Mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.
The Director General of MARAD Ms. Claudette Rogers has expressed her condolence to Persaud’s family.
“Any loss of life at sea is a blow to us” she said. She is also reminding individuals to adhere to safe boating practices by wearing life jackets and observe the rules of the sea. The incident is currently under investigation.
