[www.inewsguyana.com] – Government has options to reduce the Berbice River Bridge toll since it is the largest shareholder of the company, this in turn will ease the pressure and burden that is felt by Berbicians, according to Executive Member of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Dominic Gaskin.
Gaskin believes that measures can be implemented by Government to curb the pressure that is felt by users even though it does not have the authority to unanimously cut the toll.
During the radio programme ‘Hard Talk’ which was aired on 90.1FM on Sunday, June 1, Gaskin stated that it is the people of Berbice who are calling on them to fight for a reduction in the toll because of the burden it has placed on them and their families.
Meanwhile, Minister within the Finance Ministry, Juan Edghill does not believe the toll for the Berbice River Bridge is too high or even unaffordable and adds that there is a meager difference when compared to the ferry service that was used.
He explained that it would not be feasible to reduce the Bridge toll as a result of the Public/ Private Partnership, which made the Bridge a reality.
A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) even moved a motion in the National Assembly to reduce the toll. Many Berbicians continue to complain about the high cost of crossing the bridge which has taken a toll on their pockets.
the combined opposition was able to successful pass the motion concerning this bridge toll reduction as requested by the residents of region 5&6. to put wait to this I am still to see those concerned residents protesting.
changes as demanded by residents can never be achieved if we allowed ourselves to be guided by the RACE.
because of this attitude, this and any other minority Government will continue to push their wishes, which is against the wishes of we as a people down our throats.
