The family of the one-year-old baby who was allegedly raped by a couple from Corentyne, Berbice, is one step closer to receiving justice as the husband and wife who committed the crime were yesterday slapped with a rape charge.
Kulip Latchminia and his common-law wife Mahesree Samaroo appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Whim Magistrate’s Court where they were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
INews was told that the charge was read to the couple in-camera.
According to reports, on January 24, Latchminia and Samaroo engaged in sexual penetration of the one-year-old baby at Portugues Quarters, Berbice.
Magistrate Artiga placed each defendant on $100,000 bail and were ordered to lodge their passports with law enforcement officials.
The common-law couple have also been ordered to refrain from any form of communication with the victim or her relatives.
Latchminia and Samaroo are expected to make their next court appearance on February 29.
