A man and his wife of Auchlyne Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), were on Monday arraigned for the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when they appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
Derrick Narine Munsami, 44, and 26-year-old Christiana Munsami, both of Lot 27 Auchlyne Village, Corentyne, were jointly charged for having 705 grams of cannabis in their possession on May 14.
Both parties pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Magistrate Renita Singh.
The court heard that on the day in question, ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) acting on information received, went to the home of the man. As the ranks approached the house, Derrick was seen in his yard in the company of two females with two bulky bags in his possession.
However, upon seeing the police, the man dropped the bags and fled the scene. Ranks retrieved and opened the bags during which the quantity of ganja was unearthed.
The two women, who were left standing in the yard, were arrested. The man was later nabbed in the community and taken into custody.
At court on Monday, the couple was released on $300,00 bail each and will make their next court appearance on July 5, 2020.
