Anjanie Boodnarine, wife of convicted “drug lord” Barry Dataram, was earlier today (Wednesday) sentenced to nine months in prison when she appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge in relation to smuggling of contraband into prison.
The 21-year-old of Diamond, East Bank Demerara was on March 31, 2017 charged with attempting to smuggle contraband into the Mazaruni Penitentiary to her reputed husband, Dataram.
Dataram is presently serving an eight-year jail term at the prison after he was earlier this year, found guilty of drug trafficking and passport forgery. His obviously devoted partner, at the same time, had conspiracy and immigration charges laid against her. However, she was subsequently found not guilty.
INews had previously reported that on the day in question, Boodnarine was visiting her reputed husband at the prison when a search conducted revealed that 14 packs of cigarettes were concealed in cheese stick packets which were intended for Dataram.
She was immediately detained and later charged.
