Assistant Commissioner of Police, Balram Persaud, succumbed this morning at the Woodlands Hospital in Georgetown after failing in his battle to recover from serious injuries he sustained in a road accident earlier this month.
Persaud, who was number two in the Guyana Police Force at the time of his accident, was born on 21st July, 1961. He joined the Guyana Police Force on May 5th, 1984 and at the time of his death, he was responsible for Administration in the Force.
At the time of the accident, Persaud was driving along the West Bank Demerara road heading to Georgetown when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a utility pole a short distance from the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
This accident occurred some time after 23:00 hrs on February 5.
There are reports that the Assistant Commissioner was heading to the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) social at the Gravity Night Club when the accident occurred. The Assistant Commissioner of Police, who suffers from a heart condition, sustained at least six broken ribs in the accident.
