A Venezuelan was today fined $30,000 with an alternative of six months in prison when he appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore charged with Illegal entry.
Forty – one – year old Glony Gonsalves pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on June 23 at Charity Essequibo; he entered Guyana by sea and disembarked without the consent of an immigration officer.
The accused who spoke via an interpreter told the court that he came to Guyana to purchase medication since he is suffering from high blood pressure.
Gonsalves told the court that he planned to return to Venezuela after he received the medicine.
The accused apologized to the court for committing the offence and was told by the Magistrate that he would be deported once the fine is paid. [Royan Abrams]
