[www.inewsguyana.com] – Alpha United are the champions of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Banks Beer Cup after the final was held on Thursday, January 01 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
In front of a loud crowd, Alpha topped the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 3-0, scoring all of their goals in the second half.
The game started at a slow pace as the first half was uneventful and bit disappointing by the standards of both teams as the first 45 minutes of action ended nil all.
However, in the second half, Alpha turned on the nitrous gas and outgunned GDF scoring three goals in 24 minutes.
Gregory “Jackie Chan” Richardson scored the first two goals in the 63rd and 67th minutes while Dwight Peters put the final nail in the coffin with a goal in the 87th minute for the win and first place prize of $3M.
Meanwhile, Pele FC topped Western Tigers 1-0 to take home the third place prize of $1M.
The solitary goal was scored by Deon Alfred in the 57th minute. Alpha’s Daniel Wilson was awarded the MVP trophy of the tournament as well as joint highest goal scorer, alongside Dwayne Jacobs with 10 goals each. Alpha’s Williams was awarded the best goal keeper while Black Water was named as the most disciplined team.
