[www.inewsguyana.com] – A common – law couple of Lot 16 James Street, Albouystown Georgetown, was remanded to prison today by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for trafficking narcotics.
Carl Lashley, 23 and Christina Cumacho, 21 both pleaded not guilty to the offence, which alleged that on January, 4 at Albouystown, Georgetown, they had in their possession 93 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana).
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that on the day in question a party of policemen went to the defendant’s apartment at James Street Albouystown and conducted a search and found leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be the prohibited substance.
Attorney-at-Law Gordon Gilhuys represented the couple and applied for bail. He argued that both of his clients are being charged for the first time and Cumacho is a mother of a one month old baby.
The prosecutor opposed bail stating that no special reason was provided by the defence for bail to be granted.
Hence, the defence lawyer requested that provisions be made since the baby still breast feeds. Bail was refused for both defendants and the matter stands adjourned until January 17.
