An 18-year-old lad of Aishalton Village, South Rupununi has been arrested and is being investigated for embezzlement.
Reports are that on May 25, a total of $8.2M in cash along with pay sheets for May 2021 salaries were handed over to the teenager who worked as a District
Development Officer (DDO) within the Accounting Unit of the Region Nine Regional Democratic Council (RDC).
This was intended to be payed to government employees within the Aishalton District.
However, on June 2, several employees within Aishalton District started to complain of not receiving their salaries.
An internal investigation was conducted and revealed that a total of $867,144 could not be accounted for.
The suspect then fled the Aishalton District.
A report was made to the police on June 8, and the suspect was arrested and placed into custody.
Investigations are ongoing.
