[www.inewsguyana.com] – Opposition Chief Whip and close friend of Deputy Speaker Deborah Backer, Amna Ali confirmed just after noon on Wednesday (January 8) that the ailing lawyer was flown abroad earlier in the day to seek further medical attention.
Backer reportedly fell ill just under two months ago and was hospitalized since. The nature of her illness is currently unknown.
Opposition Leader David Granger in late December 2013 had said that the PNC/R stalwart was recovering fine and was in a stable condition. However, information reaching this news outlet indicates that Backer’s illness has taken a turn for the worst. She was reportedly taken to the airport this morning in a wheel chair.
Her illness has caused her to miss the three last sittings of the National Assembly. The Speaker at the last sitting had wished her a speedy recovery.
It is highly unlikely that she will be able to attend the next sitting of the House set for January 16.
