[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 19 – year – old man was today sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $30,000, after pleading guilty to a possession of narcotics charge before Chief Magistrates Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Jermaine Dowridge pleaded guilty to the offence which stated that on Monday, September 29 at Cuyuni, Region Seven he had in his possession 295 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
The Court heard that on the day in question, the defendant was walking in the said area when police on patrol spotted him acting suspiciously.
They stopped him and proceeded to carry out a search on his person, when the illicit drug was found in a plastic bag he was carrying.
Police claimed the bag contained leaves, seeds and stems they suspected to be cannabis.
The Haslington, East Coast Demerara resident told the Court that a man asked him to deliver the package to a shop. He apologized and begged the Magistrate for mercy.
He was then sentenced to three years imprisonment along with a fine of $30,000.
