[www.inewsguyana.com] – Following the court ruling on the budget cuts by Chief Justice (ag), Ian Chang, a number of supporters of the Alliance for Change (AFC) is urging for the entire budget to be voted down by the combined opposition in the National Assembly. A number of AFC supporters made their views known on the social network – Facebook.
The Chief Justice ruled on Wednesday, January 29 that the National Assembly has no power, under the law to cut/reduce budgetary estimates, but rather, it can approve or disapprove sections of the budget.
iNews understands that voting against the entire budget can automatically force the President to dissolve the Parliament and call elections.
Despite the ruling by the Chief Justice, the Opposition has since revealed its intentions to cut the 2014 budget, while Attorney – at – Law and Leader of the AFC, Khemraj Ramjattan intends to appeal the ruling by Chang.
The Opposition MP believes there are errors in the ruling and maintains that the Opposition has the right under the law to amend budgetary estimates. The Guyana Government had taken the Opposition to court following the slashing of the 2012 National Budget by $20.9 billion.
