[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Alliance for Change (AFC) will formally lodge its complaint with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) sometime today and tomorrow (July, 18) regarding what it has deemed as ‘illegal’ spending of some $4.5 Billion by Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh which was disapproved by the Opposition from the 2014 national budget.
The AFC explained that it is making good on its threat to have the Minister face criminal charges for his action. When asked why the Party has taken this much time to have the charges filed against the Minister, Executive Member Cathy Hughes explained that “It’s a very detailed legal document and to explain…. this is almost a legal case that has to be laid with the police and the DPP and the police have expressed to Mr. Ramjattan that they have no information on how they would deal with such a case”.
It was noted that AFC Leader, Khemraj Ramjattan had to explain to the Police the clear terms provided in the constitution which says that charges can be laid against the minister.
“All the constitutional provisions that allows to take such an action…….in fact when I spoke to him [Ramjattan], he was headed to Parliament to get copies of the different acts that are required to support the case.”
The AFC executive further explained “We are not only laying the criminal charges but we are laying the case so that the DPP and the police understand the mechanisms that are at their disposal to investigate so that is part of the challenge.”
Hughes clarified that the AFC Leader may not have spoken with the Police Commissioner or the Crime Chief however, he has been communicating with ‘representatives of the force”.
