85 murders recorded at end of August – Police

There have been 85 reported murders for 2013, from January 1 to August 31, according to statistics released by the Guyana Police Force.

The statistics indicate a 4% increase when compared to the same period last year (2012) with a total of 82 reported murders.

The Guyana Police force says of the 85 murders this year, 35 were of the disorderly type, 14 were committed during armed robberies, one was execution style, and 13 were domestically related, while the other 22 are so far undetermined.

However, the police did not say how many of these murders were solved.

Already for September, iNews has reported the murder of three persons, Sirmattie Ramnaress, who was found drenched in kerosene and her throat slit in her Diamond East Bank Demerara home, Kirk Davis who shot 16 times in front his Eccles Home and most recently, Sheldon Cheddie who was shot some seven times in Tucville, Georgetown.

The Guyana Police Force is reporting more holistically a 6% increase in serious crimes from January 1st to August 31st 2013.

The Force says a total of 2658 serious crimes were reported including offences like murder, robbery under arms, robbery with violence, larceny from the person, break and enter and larceny, burglary, rape and kidnapping.

At the end of August 2013, robbery underarms increased by 3%, with 692 reports compared to 672 for the same period in 2012.

The statistics indicate an increase of 10% in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms; and a 7% decrease in armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators.
