Investigators in New Amsterdam, Berbice, are trying to ascertain how an eight-year-old girl was shot on Friday afternoon in her leg.
Reports are that the school girl, Sarah Mohair, who lives at the New Amsterdam Technical School compound, was sent by her mother into the yard at about 16:00h to close a bathroom door and on her way a loud explosion was heard and the primary school student started to scream.
Divisional Commander Kevin Adonis said currently investigators are trying to determine where the gun would have been fired from and to determine how the child was hit by the apparent stray bullet.
Meanwhile, doctors at the New Amsterdam Hospital were able to remove the bullet from her leg. Up to press time, her condition was listed as stable.
According to Adonis, ballistic tests will be done to determine the type of weapon used.
Residents say there has been a series of loud explosions believed to the sound of fire crackers throughout the day and into the evening. The use of such explosives have become prevalent but these explosives are illegal in Guyana.
