Eight men who hail from Region Six (East-Berbice Corentyne) were on Sunday arrested for engaging in cockfighting – an illegal sport of setting two cocks to fight each other.
The men were arrested for both hosting and attending a social activity in breach of the COVID-19 emergency measures as gazetted.
The Public Health Ministry issued wide-sweeping restrictions and a national curfew to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Acting on information received, ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) visited the home of Dextroy Melville where a cockfight activity was being held.
It was during that time Melville, 31, of Bora Street Rose Hall Town was arrested for hosting a social activity.
On the other hand, Lloyd Murray, 36, of David Street, Rose Hall Town; Wilfred Mann, 32, of Rose Hall Town; Brandon Patiraj, 19, of Boundyard Port Maurant, Corentyne; Jamal Brush, 27, Mati Street Rose Hall Town; David Singh, 51, of Whim, Corentyne; Saaheed Seetaram ,20, of lot Second Street Rose Hall Town and Joshua Deheart, 22, of Lot Port Mourant, were all arrested for attending a social activity.
The men were all placed on bail and are expected to make an appearance before the Albion Magistrates’ Court on November 24, 2020.
Cockfighting is an illegal game that the police have been trying to stop, but it continues in several villages across the length and breadth of Guyana.
