The 60-year-old grandfather who allegedly chopped his 10-month old grandson to the head last weekend made his first court appearance yesterday at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, West Coast Demerara (WCD) where he was remanded to prison.
Geewan Sanichar appeared to answer to the charge(s) of unlawfully and maliciously wounding the baby with the intention of committing murder and for wounding the baby’s mother, Maria Jones.
According to information, the child’s grandfather was intoxicated when an argument ensued between him and his daughter-in-law, the child’s 17-year-old mother.
The argument is said to have been started after the child was left unattended while the mother went to the back of their yard to attend some chores.
During the argument, the grandfather reportedly picked up a cutlass and upon seeing this, the child’s mother ran to collect her child but the drunken man carried out the brutal attack where the mother was chopped once to the right hand and the baby received a chop to the head.
The baby and mother were both rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital but were transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital.
Meanwhile, the 10-month-old baby of Lot 70 Middle Dam, La Grange, West Bank Demerara continues to battle for his life at the Georgetown Public Hospital and is said to be in a critical condition.
His mother’s condition, however, is said to be stable.
In presenting the case, the police prosecutor stated that should bail be granted to the defendant, there is a possibility that Sanichar would not return for trial.
The prosecutor also requested that the matter be transferred to the Wales Magistrate’s Court, West Bank Demerara (WBD), where Sanichar is scheduled to make his next appearance on February 26.
