Six persons, one of whom was admitted as a patient at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WRDH) received serious injuries when the minibus in which they were traversing the West Coast Demerara Public Road lost control and slammed into a utility pole before bursting into flames.
Those injured have been identified as 19-year-old Debra Miller of Uitvulgt, West Coast Demerara (WCD), 24-year-old Krishna Persaud of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), Genie Persaud of Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD) , Carlon Alfred, 43, of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) and the bus driver, 47-year-old Rajesh Dhanaram of Zeelugt.
Inews was informed that the driver at the time of the accident was proceeding east along the above mentioned public road when he attempted to overtake another vehicle.
In doing so, he lost control of minibus BWW 7543 and crashed into a utility pole before toppling on its side.
While public spirited persons were attempting to assist the passengers out of the vehicle, the minibus burst into flames causing them to sustain burns about their heads, feet and bodies.
Those injured were rushed to the hospital where they were treated and sent away. However, the bus conductor, Carlton Alfred has since been admitted at the medical facility for burns about his chest, belly and foot.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the bus driver showed no sign of alcohol consumption.
He has since been taken into Police custody where he is assisting with investigations.
