A 53-year-old man lost his life after the bicycle he was riding was struck down by an alleged speeding car at Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Andray Simmons of Parker Street, Providence, EBD was riding his bicycle at around 18:00hrs when he was involved in the accident with motorcar PVV 1380, driven by a 30-year-old man of Belle West Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
The motorcar was proceeding north along the eastern driving lane of the western carriageway on the Providence Public Road when, in the vicinity of the National Stadium, the driver claimed that the pedal cyclist rode across the road and ended up in his path.
The driver said he applied breaks but still ended up hitting Simmons, who was flung into the air and then landed on the front windscreen of the motorcar, before landing on the ground.
The driver rushed Simmons to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the motorcar, and no trace of alcohol was detected. He was taken into police custody where he is assisting with the investigation.
