[www.inewsguyana.com] – Delroy Beresford has been sentenced to 50 months imprisonment by Magistrate Judy Latchman for causing the death of 45 – year – old Carol Overton due to dangerous driving.
Beresford is a former Air Conditioning Technician of Lot 77 Cummings Lane, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara. The court heard that on November 7, 2014 at Mocha Access Road, East Bank Demerara, he drove motorcar PPP 9521 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Overton.
According to the prosecution, at around 21:00 hrs on the day in question, Beresford was driving at a fast rate of speed on the Mocha Access Road and Overton was walking in the opposition direction
The court heard that Beresford was blinded by a bright light and swerved to avoid a collision with another car; however he crashed into the woman, sending her body some 24 feet away from impact, into nearby bushes.
Beresford was represented by Attorney-at-law, Roger Yearwood. The matter was first called on November 11, before former Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and he was initially released on $250,000 bail.
i guess they should no longer name these things accidents but instead as deliberate because accidents don’t happen??!!! another callous sentence driven by the urge of the magistrates to try to prove the deterrence effect of the law compensation should have been mulled!
T oo harsh a penality.while i do agree its a life taken there should be some amount of leniency. His family should appeal the ruling. There are people who have committed more serious crime and didnt get a day jail
