Five men were in the wee hours of Tuesday morning shot dead during an exchange of gunfire with police at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
Based on reports reaching this publication, the men were about to commit a robbery on one of the houses in a gated community.
While information remains sketchy, INews understands that the car that transported the men were being traced to the location after police received a tip off and more so acted on the intelligence gathered.
Upon exiting the motorcar, the men reportedly saw the police vehicles and opened fire and in retaliation the police returned same.
The men were fatally wounded.
Crime Chief Paul Williams and C Division Commander are presently at the scene.
