4 years jail, $3.3M fine for man busted with 1.608 kilos of cocaine

A twenty-three-year-old man was on Thursday sentenced to four years in prison and fined 3.3 million dollars by Magistrate Peter Hugh when he appeared in the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Kelvin Sauers known as ‘John’ pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

It was alleged that on July 6, 2018 while at his Lot 8 Enterprise, East Coast Demerara home, he had in his possession 1.608 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

According to Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), prosecutor Konyo Sandiford on the day in question CANU ranks acting on an intelligence-led operation went to the man’s home to conduct a search.

The court heard that upon seeing the ranks Sauers exited the house through a window in a bid to escape.

However, the ranks proceeded to search the home and subsequently found two haversacks  which contained the suspected cocaine which amounted to 279 pellets.

Moreover, the Prosecution informed that court that Sauers was also implicated in another incident regarding 19-year-old Anisah Hardy, who was busted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) after it was discovered that she ingested some 119 pellets of cocaine- amounting to 702 grams.

Hardy had told investigators that Sauers had provided her with the narcotics.

She was subsequently jailed for 3 years and fined $1.4M.

On July 11, 2018, a wanted bulletin was issued for Sauers and on July 24, the man turned himself in.
