…as vehicle stops at intersection of Leopold and Breda Streets
Five members of the Coomacka Church of Christ located in Linden were on Friday afternoon robbed of a significant amount of cash and valuables after being ambushed by four men at the intersection of Leopold and Breda Streets, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
The victims have been identified as United States Citizens, Darlene Gaines, 64, Daisy Gaines, 19, Joe Hughes, 60, Christina Gaines-Sluss, 45, and Guyanese Robin Collins, 40.
Based on information received, the victims were robbed of one Samsung Galaxy s8 mobile phone- valued at $140,000-, a quantity of medications- valued at $80,000-, one MP3 Player- valued at $5,000, the US Passport of Joe Hughes, and US$2,100 among other valuables.
INews understands that the incident occurred at about 13:00h.
Enquiries revealed that on the day in question, the four US Citizens had arrived in Guyana and were proceeding to Georgetown with Collins in a minibus to do some shopping.
However, as the vehicle slowed down at the stated intersection to allow other vehicles to pass, one armed man, accompanied by three others approached the vehicle and held the driver- Wayne Collins- at gunpoint.
The armed suspect allegedly pulled the keys out of the minibus while his accomplices rushed to relieve the frightened victims of their valuables.
In just a few minutes, the bandits then made good their escape on foot, east along Leopold Street, Georgetown.
Police are currently investigating the robbery.
