Shelly Russell,35, of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown was apparently unaware that lighting fireworks was illegal. She found herself unrepresented by legal counsel as she appeared before Georgetown Magistrate Leron Daly on Friday last, charged with the offence.
She pleaded guilty to exploding fireworks on October 22, 2017 at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown to the annoyance of others. The court heard that, following the Diwali celebrations, the defendant continued to set off “squibs and whistling thunders” even after neighbours complained about the annoyance.
Accordingly, the Police became involved, and Russell was charged with the offence.
Magistrate Daly fined Russell $20,000 and placed her on a bond to keep the peace for the next two years.
