A 25-year-old man has pleaded guilty to killing his 18-year-old drinking buddy on February 13, 2019 at Frenchman Backdam, Mabura, Region 10 (Upper Demerara – Berbice).
Imran Daniels was arraigned at the High Court in Demerara before Justice Brassington Reynolds via Zoom on Monday.
He is charged with killing Alex Daniels.
Initially, he was indicted for murder by State Prosecutors Teriq Mohammed and Tyra Bakker.
However, Daniels opted to plead guilty to a manslaughter charge.
Facts presented by the State Prosecutors stated that on the day in question, the victim, the suspect, and another man were chatting and imbibing alcohol at a shop at Frenchman Backdam, Upper Demerara River.
However, at around 19:30h on the day in question, Imran and Alex were involved in a heated argument.
During the argument, the suspect armed himself with a knife and stabbed his drinking buddy.
The stabbing was witnessed by Thakur Persaud who stated that he heard Alex telling Imran, “Look ya jook meh! Ya jook meh!”
The Prosecutors contended that Persaud got out of his hammock and went to rescue Alex, and discovered a black-handled knife lying next to him.
After the entire ordeal, the suspect attempted to flee but was pursued and apprehended by lawmen.
He was represented by lawyer Ravindra Mohabir and will return to court on July 20, 2020, for the presentation of a probation report in plea of mitigation before sentencing is handed down.
