[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 22 – year – old man who appeared to be of unsound mind was remanded to prison yesterday by Magistrate Judy Latchman for allegedly stealing a motor vehicle.
Teffon Peters of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on Wednesday, September 24 at Wellington Street, he stole one Toyota Hilux GLL 3333 valued $3.5 million, property of Rahul Archers.
His brother, Chillon Peters who was present in Court came forward and informed the Magistrate that his brother is suffering from an illness; however he did not mention what the illness is.
The accused, under security, was instructed to sit after he made repeated attempts to exit the dock.
According to his brother, he was charged with a similar offence which was later discharged before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Police Prosecutor, Kerry Bostwick told the Court that the Virtual Complainant, who is a Mechanic, parked his car on Wellington Street just in front of Gizmos and Gadgets. He left the ignition running while he went into the store to purchase credit for his cellular phone.
The accused then allegedly drove away with the vehicle even though the VC tried to stop him.
Archer managed to stop another vehicle and then gave chase. With the assistance of public spirited citizens, the accused was apprehended at the stop light in the vicinity of Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce on South Road.
The matter was transferred before the Chief Magistrate on September 29.
